Halloooo, beautiful human! You metabolic warrior…thank you for your time, attention and caring enough to want more for you. Prevention over reaction. Wellness over illness. Addressing a lifestyle disease with a lifestyle intervention first, rather than a reflexive prescription drug for symptom control. A pill for every ill.
But what does a metabolic approach to medicine mean? What does it look like? And who am I to suggest a different approach?
We haven’t always been this sick. In 1900, 1% of adults lived with obesity. Now it’s one out of every three. Our genetics haven’t changed that much in 125 years, but almost everything else has!
Sugar and refined grains contaminate every corner of our grocery stores
Seed oils, originally designed as engine lubricants, are nearly ubiquitous with ultra processed food and restaurant/ fast food meal
Meat, especially beef, has been demonized as it is high in saturated fat and cholesterol, despite both these nutrients being an essential part of a healthy body.
Screens, office jobs and motorized travel have humans sedentary more than they evolved to be.
Sleep is considered by many a luxury they can’t afford, working two jobs to afford their expenses.
We self medicate our stress, anxiety and depression with toxins like alcohol, tobacco and cannabis In addition we use behavioral addictions such as video games, gambling, and pornography, to numb or escape as we’ve become more socially disconnected.
Endocrine disruptors, known as xenoestrogens, are everywhere, from cleaning & personal care products, canned goods, paper receipts to cheap scented candles.
Our microbiomes have been ravaged by ultra processed foods, widespread antibiotics, pesticides, stress & medications
Dietary dogma would have us grazing on food all day long, with three meals and three snacks. Eating has become something to do for the bored and a curse to those living with food addiction or an eating disorder.
We passed the keys of our food guide to corporations, interested in selling either processed food or drugs.
Despite this depressing laundry list, there is hope! As we become aware of where we fell down, we can now rise with a new focus. Eating with mindfulness and intention shifts our relationship with food. What we eat is more than an energetic fuel: it is how we build our health, through essential macronutrients, vitamins and minerals. By removing the toxins, improving our diet, moving our bodies and prioritizing sleep and stress management, the body will heal. We just have to give ourselves time and the right metabolic conditions.
I hope you’ll join me next month as we dive into our metabolism and how it dictates… everything. I’ll be doing a new talk called “Keto Curious: Navigating Food for Your Metabolic Health.” This is for anyone curious about improving their health, wanting to reverse a chronic disease or even those rock stars that have been keto for ages and would love to be in the company of other like minded souls! The talk will be from 7-9 at Lockwood Hall at PW United Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025.
With love, hope and gratitude,
Jocelyn
